SEK 100 million for unique flight simulator at FOI

[2007-12-13]
[Press release] In a new assignment for FOI, the Swedish Armed Forces have placed an order for a further three years’ pilot training in FOI’s unique flight simulator.

“It is good news that the Swedish Armed Forces choose FOI when they invest in cost-effective training in their leading-edge core competence,” says Anders Borgvall, Head of FOI’s Combat Simulation Division. Over the last ten years, FOI has developed a very substantial body of expertise in the field of flight simulation. This assignment is yet further acknowledgement that our world-leading facilities are an attractive proposition in the competition for assignments involving advanced training in a scenario environment.

The operational simulation facilities run different types of simulation. Most recently this activity has been focused primarily on the possible participation of Swedish Air Force units in international peace support operations. Our customers, both Swedish and international organisations in the defence sector, say that realistic exercises under simulated operational conditions, forms an essential part of preparing properly for such missions.

“We are frequently complimented by our customers for our unique flexibility which enables us to adapt the facilities rapidly to match the varying conditions encountered in different parts of the world. Our custom-designed instruction and training also gives us a competitive edge which we are able to put to good use well beyond Sweden’s borders,” adds Anders Borgvall.

Facts

FOI’s simulation facilities (the Swedish Air Force Combat Simulation Centre – FLSC) constitute an industry-independent study environment offering a very high level of flexibility with an effective and well documented training regime. On an annual basis, the FLSC trains around 400 pilots, fighter controllers and other personnel from Sweden and abroad. The facilities also offer the possibility of joint training between civil and military actors as well as between different nations. The FLSC can provide simulations with computer-generated combat forces on several levels ranging from operational and tactical levels to technical development and research. The FLSC also acts as a think tank and meeting place for operators, decision makers and developers.
