[Press release] Men consume more energy than women

[2008-06-05]
Men’s total energy consumption is 20 percent higher than women’s. They also consume a substantially greater proportion of this energy on transport. This is shown in a new FOI report by Annika Carlsson-Kanyama and Riitta Räty.

Single women and single men consume energy in different ways. Women use more energy on consumer goods and clothes while men use more on driving.

“If one is to help women to be more energy efficient in their everyday lives, a way needs to be found which makes it easier to judge the energy demands of different goods and services. Men mainly need some means of reducing their energy consumption in the transport category,” says Annika Carlsson-Kanyama.

In the report the authors draw attention to the fact that men tend to be less receptive than women to the idea of adapting their driving activities to the imperatives of climate change. Women on the other hand would like to see more environment-related product information. The report also draws attention to the advantages of scale when people live together, and to the fact that women are heavily under-represented on the boards of energy companies.
