Crisis management from a EU perspective – new handbook

[2009-10-01]
FOI’s handbook civil crisis management within the EU has now been released by Springer Publishing Company. Stefan Olsson has edited the book, which was written by a number of crisis management experts at FOI.

In less than a decade Europe has witnessed major terrorist attacks and a series of large-scale natural disasters. These incidents have made it clear that there is a need to collaborate. As a result, EU has developed a system for jointly handling crises in the event of major disasters or emergencies.

FOI’s handbook “Crisis Management in the European Union” contains an overview of the European crisis management system and offers insight into how EU policy in the field has evolved, along with hands-on descriptions of EU’s central crisis management arrangements. This book is intended for EU departments and authorities, as well as students and journalists.

“But anyone who is involved or interested in the EU crisis management system ought to benefit from the book,” says Stefan Olsson.
“As someone who has studied crisis management closely, I have found the book engaging, interesting and relevant. I read every line with great interest. The authors are to be commended for the quality of research that went into this work,” says Mark Rhinard, Senior Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
