The major aim of the conference is to assess Russia’s efforts to rebuild its military strength and the consequences of this to Russian society, to Europe and to the world. ´Russia is back´ on the world stage, also militarily. Although not a return to its former global political and military status, Russia’s return carries with it consequences for its neighbourhood and despite the U.S. initiative to bring about a ´reset´ of relations, the new Russian military doctrine places the United States and NATO as a major danger to Russia – albeit not defining these as a ‘military threat’.
