Vehicles & Aeronautics

Centre for Vehicles and Aeronautics. The centre includes and co-ordinates the FOI competences within aeronautics and other vehicle related techniques. The activity includes about 120 persons.

During a half a century competence and experience have been built up through Swedish civil and military research and development project, ranging from aircraft to un-manned autonomous vehicles, so called UAV´s.

FOI´s competence is essentially within the area of flying vehicles, such as aircraft and missiles, but includes underwater vehicles, ships and ground vehicles. FOI develops models for simulation of all types of vehicles and performs advanced research and computations within areas as for example:

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Computational solid mechanics (e.g. finite element methods, FEM)
  • Computational electromagnetics (CEM)
  • Infra red light (IR)
  • Signatures
  • Noise and exhaust emissions
  • Navigation and guidance control

Within systems evaluation there exists a massive experience in supporting the Armed Forces with qualified knowledge. Several of the competence groups work with different aspects of autonomy.

The group working with large scale computational mechanics is world leading within this field.

An extensive international collaboration exists. Often through developing or research projects within e.g. the EU framework programs and GARTEUR, Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe
