Operational Research, Modelling and Simulation
The effective use of resources and soundly based data to support decision-making are as important in the Armed Forces as in other areas of society.
The work takes place in a number of sub-categories: operational analysis and support, modelling, simulation and logistics, together with manned simulation and visualisation at the Air Force Combat Simulation Centre, FLSC, a unique facility for developing technical and tactical aspects of air combat using “man-in-the-loop” simulations. FOI develops methods for reliable and cost-effective modelling and simulation. Operational research groups support the activities of the Armed Forces in contributing to the systematic aspects and quality of decision support data. One important challenge in the area of logistics lies in the integration of effective methods in defence activities and the coordination of these with the activities and solutions of civil actors both nationally and internationally. The principal customers are the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to whom support is provided across a broad spectrum of activities ranging from planning and implementation, long-term development and acquisition to tactics development, exercises and training.
