Defence & Security, Systems and Technology

The knowledge and ability to build and describe complex technical systems is today a requirement in both the military and the civilian spheres.

FOI creates, evaluates and disseminates knowledges and techniques to handle threats and vulnerabilities for both the Swedish Armed Forces and the civilian society.

Through the Division for Defence & Security, Systems and Technology, FOI generates technical and scientific knowledge useful at all levels, from components to complex systems. Core competences include energetic materials, aeronautics, launch and propulsion, underwater technology, conventional warheads, nuclear weapon issues, ballistic protection, modelling and simulation and assessment of effects and vulnerability up to platform levels.

The division is strongly placed both nationally and internationally. Its research work is both multi-disciplinary and problem-oriented. The broad range of expertise and a well developed international network gives FOI a unique capability to solve many problems in its area of expertise. Within this division, FOI has advanced and unique resources at its disposal for so well small as large scale experiments.

Among the customers to whom FOI provides support is the UN, the EU, the Swedish Rescue Services Agency, the Defence Material Administration (FMV) and the Swedish Judicial System. Examples of areas in which our knowledge has been applied spans from vehicle airbags to the control regime of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Departments

Aeronautics and systems integration

The defence of today and tomorrow requires swift, precise and coordinated actions. The activities of the department aim to support the defence’s need of technology studies and research regarding systems of large complexity.

Energetic Materials

Expert knowledge and the safe handling of explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics is of vital importance to the defence forces and to the civil community.

Nuclear Weapons Related Issues

Sweden is deeply involved with international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. FOI’s Department for Nuclear Weapon Issues closely follows developments regarding the threat, preparedness and protection.

Physical Protection and Weapons Effects

Participation in international operations and changing threat scenarios make new demands on the physical protection of personnel and equipment.

Underwater Research

Underwater surveillance in the littorals is important for mitigating military threats, but also for protection of crucial infrastructures and sensitive coastal environments.

Warheads and Propulsion

The defence authorities need to assess how new technology can be applied in future weapon systems, what the limitations are and what implications there may be both in terms of threats and new possibilities.
