Nuclear Weapons Related Issues

Sweden is deeply involved with international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. FOI’s Department for Nuclear Weapon Issues closely follows developments regarding the threat, preparedness and protection.

The department is engaged in research relating to the threat posed by nuclear weapons and undertakes analyses to enable changes in the threat picture to be identified at an early stage. An important part of this work relates to the physical principles of nuclear warheads and the effects of these weapons.

We have developed, and use, measuring stations for particulate and gaseous forms of radioactivity. Our technical research, equipment and studies make it possible for us and our customers to make independent professional assessments of relevant nuclear weapons issues of importance to Sweden.

We receive assignments from both the civil and the military authorities. We provide support to the Government, for example in relation to Sweden’s involvement in disarmament, non-proliferation and export control matters. FOI’s measuring stations for particulate and gaseous radioactivity are used in the verification system for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). We operate a national network of radionuclide stations to provide early warning of nuclear events.
