Research Fields

FOI develops models for simulation of all types of vehicles and performs advanced research and computations within areas as for example:

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • Computational solid mechanics (e.g. finite element methods, FEM)
  • Computational electromagnetics (CEM)
  • Infra red light (IR)
  • Signatures
  • Noise and exhaust emissions
  • Navigation and guidance control

Aircraft Accident Investigations

FOI regularly participates in aircraft accident investigations to make flying safer.

Computational Aerodynamics

The most important research fields of aerodynamics are flow physics modelling, flow control and aerodynamic shape optimisation. The achievments in these research areas result from persistent long term research activities in collaboration with universities

Concept Studies

FOI is working with concept studies of aircraft, UAVs, spacecraft, and missiles.

Signature Analysis

Signature analysis is used in multidisciplinary analysis of stealthy aeronautical vehicles as well as the design of particular low signature sub-systems.

Structural Mechanics

The main field within the research area of structural mechanics is the development of computational tools with special emphasis on nonlinear large scale analysis of damaged metal and composite structures.
