A Toolbox for Our New Climate
The Climatools research application helps decision-makers to adapt our society to the consequences of climate changes. The application is primarily aimed at such subject areas as health, built-up areas, tourism and outdoor life.
- The climate changes are a fact. Even if we limit the emissions we will have a warmer and wilder climate in a not so far future. We can already see changes this day, and the generation born today might experience the greatest climate change in the history of Sweden, says Annika Carlsson-Kanyama, Climatools climate manager.
Climatools is run by FOI on behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. It started in 2006 and is expected to continue until 2011, has a turnover of 25 million Swedish Crowns (SEK) and is carried out in co-operation with KTH (The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm) and the universities of Umeå and Uppsala.
The climate changes create new conditions which we have to adapt to. In order to help community planners and decision-makers with adaptation measures, FOI and the other partners are developing a set of tools. Issues that have to be handled are for example the way in which we calculate costs for and revenues from adaptation measures, how we handle target conflicts and how we can elevate the ethical matters. During the first part of the programme the tools are developed in a preliminary form, and they are then tested and improved during the second part. During this process Climatools will create new knowledge concerning the adaptations in society that might be necessary in the future.
- The tools will cover all of the climate issue such as ethics, economy, public health, equality and technology, Annika Carlsson-Kanyama concludes.
