Decision Support Systems

The problem faced by decision makers is not simply to have good data and information. It is also important to be able to interpret the data and information simply and quickly.

In FOI’s Department for Decision Support Systems, we develop methods and techniqes for assimilating and weighing data and information, as well as for simulation of complex problems, as a basis for sound decisions.

In the Department for Decision Support Systems, FOI undertakes applied research in the area of technical support for decision making. The aim is to develop methods and systems which provide decision makers and system operators with the best possible basis on which to make sound decisions given the available data and information.

The aim of the work on fusion is to handle data and information in an intelligent way. We develop methods of sifting out uncertain, misinterpreted, intentionally misleading, irrelevant and contradictory information from what is both relevant and correct.

In the area of modeling and simulation (M&S) we develop methods and techniques that can be used as a basis for testing the effects of various strategies, available for a decision maker in a particular situation. This includes simulations that enable studies of the dynamics of systems in a pedagogic manner, which in the end contributes to wiser decisions.

Our accumulated knowledge base enables us to help both military and civil customers with research and studies as well as with the development of methods and technology. Our main customers are the Swedish Armed Forces and the Defence Materiel Administration.
