Aeronautics and systems integration
The defence of today and tomorrow requires swift, precise and coordinated actions. The activities of the department aim to support the defence’s need of technology studies and research regarding systems of large complexity.
The main activities of the department comprise:
• Studies and evaluations of airborne carriers and weapons systems
• Aeronautics
• Software development
Within aeronautics, research and applications are conducted regarding aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, guidance, navigation, radar and IR signature analysis, solid mechanics and related environmental issues. Applications are usually conducted in multi-disciplinary form for instance concept studies or failure investigations. Experimental activity is conducted in solid mechanics and smart structures. Software development is divided between architecture and models for real time simulations, and the development of computational tools for both studies and sophisticated technology applications.
By way of thoroughly established collaboration with other departments the entire FOI can be exploited to solve our client’s problems and development needs.
Among our clients and contractors one finds the Swedish Armed Forces (FM), the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), civilian authorities and government departments (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UD), both Swedish and European industry, the US Air Force and the Finnish Air Force. Our international collaboration is extensive for instance aeronautic research within the seventh EU framework and GARTEUR.
