FOI (Swedish Defence Research Agency) is a national expert authority with regard to issues concerning biological weapons, chemical weapons and nuclear weapons. This implies that FOI supports the government and authorities concerned with advice and analysis with regard to these issues and contribute with technological knowledge in connection with disarmament negotiations. It was for example the FOI laboratory that was used to examine letters with suspicious anthrax content in the autumn of 2001. Read more about our resources.

One important mission for FOI is to conduct research och provide advice about protection and minimizing of effects if Sweden is subjected to attacks with biological and chemical weapons or is subjected to emissions of toxic industrial chemicals or to hazardous bacteria or virus. We live in a vulnerable society in which threats and risks do not acknowledge national borders. The knowledge and equipment within FOI can be used for everything from preventing or mitigating the effects in connection with serious epidemics or collapsing IT systems to the prevention of damages caused by extreme storms.
