Analyses and commissions
FOI’s experts carry out analysis work at a high level for companies working with advanced analyses within such areas as biotechnology, chemical engineering and medicine.
FOI’s experts use instruments, records and laboratories to handle and analyse highly toxic chemicals, infectious pathogenic organisms, radioactive samples and combinations of these different kinds of substances.
Some examples of tasks that can be carried out by FOI are:
• Analyses of industrial chemicals and their relevant toxicological degradation products.
• Analyses of working environment problems using for example isothyocyanates.
• Chemical examinations and component analyses.
• Methods development for sampling and sample preparation.
• Manufacture of reference substances.
• Determination of structural details and modifications in proteins.
• Trace analyses of substances in biologic liquids.
• Forensic analyses for government authorities.
• Analyses of hazardous pathogenic microorganisms such as biological weapons and potential substances for bioterrorists.
• Analyses of such toxic chemical substances as chemical weapons, toxins, explosives and other environmentally hostile chemicals.
• Analyses of radioactive nuclides and nuclear material.
• Research with regard to the tularemia bacteria Fransicella tularensis – a potential weapon.
FOI has vast experience of working with CBRNE* substances. The staff includes trained microbiologists, analytical chemists, bioinformaticians, radiochemists, physicists, veterinarians and medical doctors.
* CBRNE is a designation for chemical (C), bacteriological (B), radiological (R), nuclear (N) and explosive (E) weapons.
