Environmental risk assessment training and shooting fields

Metal leakage from ammunition bullets

The research project include long-term monitoring of leaching of metals from ammunition bullets in bullet trap sand and examination of metal compounds that are formed in the surrounding soil materials. For further information, contact the project leader Jan Sjöström.

 

The ECHEMNET project

The objective of the project is to set up an EU-level network of Member State representatives (ECHEMNET) with responsibility for piloting and testing RAS-CHEM and the guidance documents. The project will ensure that experience of, and best practices adopted by, one Member State following an incident benefit other Member States and that the response to such incidents is complementary to that of other sectors and actors (e.g. the EU Civil Protection Mechanism; CPM; World Health Organization, WHO; and the European Centre for Disease Control, ECDC). It will also enable an efficient and coherent EU-level response to potentially devastating cross-border events through the consistent use of RAS-CHEM (e.g. in assigning alert levels), whilst avoiding duplication of effort (e.g. by cross posting to the Early Warning System for Communicable Diseases and Outbreak of Unknown Aetiology (EWRS) and other rapid alerting systems). This project may be of particular value for Member States with less capacity and expertise to respond to chemical events. ECHEMNET will support the implementation of the EU Decision for Serious Cross Border Health Threats and International Health Regulations by describing and testing a well-defined and robust mechanism to trigger risk assessment and coordination of public health measures for transboundary chemical public health threats in the European Union. http://www.echemnet.euexternal link

The CELESTE project

The Case studies, Exercises, LEarning, Surveys and Training across Europe (CELESTE) consortium is delivering against the Multiple Framework Contract for ‘Scripting, planning, conduction and evaluation of exercises, training and assessment implementing the draft Decision on cross-border threats to health’.

 

The contract, which is signed between the consortium and the European Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (acting under the mandate given by the European Commission (Directorate - General for Health and Consumers, DG SANCO)), will run for three years, with one possible extension for one more year.

 

The partners of the consortium: Public Health England, Instituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS), Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and The European CBRNE Center, Umea University all have extensive experience and well established records of working with the European Commission and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to support and inform public health activities in the EU and beyond over many years. Leakage of chemical warfare agents (CWA) in the Baltic Sea, CHEMSEA, an EU-project

Perform systematic updating of dumping areas for CWA. Development of chemical and toxicological analysis capability for CWA in environmental samples and describe the distribution and ecological effects of CWA in the dumping areas. Knowledge is addressed to the authorities, concerned businesses and professionals to sea. Elaborate guidelines (Preparedness) of the CWA events, training and information materials for safe behaviour when eg fishermen exposed to CWA caught in fishing gear.
