Sweden’s national body of technical expertise in nuclear weapons-related issues resides within FOI. Work in this field covers two main areas. One area focuses on the assessment of the threat posed by nuclear weapons, and this work includes technical issues concerning disarmament and non-proliferation. Another area deals with matters relating to technical verification, in particular how one can detect whether a nuclear test has been performed, but also how other agreements on nuclear weapons can be verified.
FOI has a world leading position when it comes to sampling, measurement and analysis of radioactive noble gases. These techniques are important in the compliance monitoring required for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). We also possess a unique level of technical competence in the threat assessment of the risks associated with the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
These activities are largely financed through appropriation from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence but assignments are also undertaken for the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
