Decision Support Systems and Information Fusion

The Swedish Defence Research Agency develops smart solutions ranging from data collection to innovative presentation systems. The research increases the user’s ability to understand and translate available information into effective decisions. The wide range of competencies and well-developed national and international networks provides a unique ability to solve many problems within the areas of expertise.

The research work covers both technology and methods and bridges the divide between purely technical research and, for example, sensor and communications systems and human decision-making. The ultimate aim is to develop improved command and control capabilities, primarily in the defence environment but not only here. Our particular strength lies in our ability, in concert with others, to take an overall perspective in the development of support tools for command and control and for decision-making processes in complex environments. Our customers include the Swedish Armed Forces and the EU but also Vinnova and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. Areas of experties include artificial intelligence, information fusion, security informatics, modelling and simulation, and decision making.

Decision support, knowledge and information fusion

Our competence in the area of decision support, knowledge management and information fusion covers primarily fusion and semantic techniques for decision support and information management, fusion of heterogeneous data and information to create situation pictures, AI, the processing of uncertain information and the analysis of large amounts of data, situation analysis and situational reasoning as well as interoperability between information systems, both civil and military. The focus is on creating systems that help human operators to create situational understanding based on all available information from, for example, sensors, text in the form of reports, web pages and other documents, video streams, sound or structured information stored in databases. Data mining and text mining are important areas for the future. The results of this research also have applications in other quite different areas, for example in information management for environmental inspectors.

Simulation and distributed systems

FOI’s activity in simulation and distributed systems encompasses primarily decision support, which makes use of embedded simulations with the focus on operational plans, modelling and simulation as well as expert support in areas such as training and exercises, agent technologies and the representation of human behaviour. Other areas include processes and methods for distributed simulations with a focus on model verification, validation and accreditation (VV & A), simulation for advance personnel management and planning including the scaling of personnel resources as well as the system integration of distributed simulation, command and control systems and sensors with applications primarily (but not exclusively) in the military area and in the area relating to civil security.
