NOTS

Nordic and Transatlantic Security – NOTS

The need for enhanced analysis and insight in developments in security- and defence policies in our Nordic, European and transatlantic neighbours is the main focus for the NOTS project. Sweden's Nordic neighbourhood and the wider world is undergoing rapid change, not least in the field of defence and security. Changes to the military dimension affect the security environment. To detect and analyse changes to defence-and security priorities by Nordic nations, European great powers and in the United States is central to the NOTS project.

The main clients are Swedish ministries and the Armed forces, as well as the wider society. The work also mean extensive international contacts and cooperation.

The NOTS project was set up in 2015, based on expertise built up in earlier FOI-projects. It focuses on five main areas, regionally and thematically identified:

  • The Nordic region, including the Arctic (Foreign-, defence- and security policies in the ten nations of the Baltic Sea region, including relevant cooperative bodies).
  • Great powers in Europe (German, British and French defence and security policies, including relevant factors of domestic policy affecting these areas).
  • The United States (American foreign-, defence and security policies, including relevant factors of domestic policy affecting these areas).
  • NATO (Organisational structures, defence planning, crisis management and transatlantic relations).
  • EU (Institutions, structures and ongoing developments regarding security).

Within this framework, different thematic studies can be undertaken, such the role of nuclear weapons in strategic thinking of western nations. Different bi-, tri-, and multilateral conditions and relations can also be analysed, for example U.S. role and interests in the Nordic region.
