A new anthology offers a guide to an unsettled world

Geopolitical turbulence, tensions, and economic uncertainty, alongside rapid technological transformation, are now part of everyday reality. FOI’s eleventh volume in the Strategic Outlook series examines this new landscape.

An abstract motive.

Strategic Outlook is a recurring, forward-looking FOI anthology that highlights key issues of strategic importance for defence, foreign, and security policy. Strategic Outlook 11: Wide Awake in a World of Disorder consists of three parts: Security Policy; Total Defence and Societal Security; and Military Affairs and Technology.

“The authors of the 20 chapters come from five of FOI’s research divisions, and the content ranges from the US’s new security policy to the defence industry of the future. There is also a chapter on how climate change will affect the future of defence, written by a researcher from NATO’s Climate Change and Security Centre of Excellence,” says Gabriella Körling, FOI researcher and deputy project manager for Strategic Outlook 11.

The editors of Strategic Outlook 11 have sought to do more than simply catalogue the problems.

“The world order is undergoing a period of uncertainty, marked by increased great-power rivalry, weakened international institutions, and a growing emphasis on national power. At the same time, much international cooperation remains in place, creating a complex and contradictory picture of the international system today,” says Calle Håkansson, FOI researcher and project manager for Strategic Outlook 11.
