Abstract
The method of variable separation is often a powerful tool to solve PDEs. However it is not always possible. Studying the neutron diffusion equation as an example, there are solutions separated in the time variable and the space co-ordinates if the parameters are independent of time. A method is suggested how this type of solution could best be fit to the case where variable separation is not possible.
