Abstract
This report describes the principle for a torsional Hopkinson bar, which is a method for testing material behaviour under fast shear loads. The mechanical construction, data measuring system and data processing are described in some detail. The apparatus allows shear strain rates up to 5000s-1. The equipment, which is unique for Sweden and possible also the Nordic countries, has mainly been used for investigating metallic materials but composites have also been tested.
