Abstract
In autumn 2000, a subgroup to FORMA on satellite issues was formed. The question that this group answers here is whether commercially available remote sensing satellites can be used for DBA purposes. Sensors which exist on commercially available remote sensing satellites are optical and SAR. Most satellite passages are concentrated to a few hours in the morning. In 2005, there will probably be around 20 optical, commercially available remote sensing satellites and up to 10 SAR satellites. In 2010 the number of SAR satellites will probably have risen to slightly more than 15. Commercially available remote sensing satellites can be used during peace, crises and war and should be regarded as a complement to other sensors. They can be used for all tasks of the Swedish Armed Forces. Economically subscdptonlassured access to satellite imagery complemented With purchase of separate images from areas outside of the Esrange-Sturup "coverage~´ seems to be the most advantageous alternative. Satellite reconnaissance data, which are an asset in NCW, can usefully be distributed to lower levels of units via the network as well as be used on a strategicloperational level. Satellite reconnaissance is especial useful when there is no rush for information.
