Abstract
The importance of space assets has increased for civilian as well as military applications. As the technology matures the number of applications has increased and most people use on a daily basis systems that in one way or another rely on space assets. With the aim of doing an inventory of functions and problems related to space assets that are of interest to the Armed Forces, FOI has carried out a study entitled Space and Defence. The study has shown that space assets can be of use to the Swedish Armed Forces for a number of different functions. Three areas of special interest are: Satellite-related functions, anti-satellite systems and ionosperic modification. Due to the expected value of space assets to the Swedish Armed Forces and the interest shown by other nations in space-related systems, the study suggests that a process for gathering knowledge and information about military applications of space assets should be initiated. With a start in the Armed Forces requirements a Swedish Armed Forces space policy should be developed where both military, civilian and commercial space assets are taken into consideration. The possibilities associated with space assets supporting Swedish Armed Forces involved in peace support operations should be studied independently.
