Abstract

To improve experimental equipment for mine detection an underwater active electromagnetic dipole sensor has been fitted with linear motors allowing xy-motion of the receiver. The motors can be controlled by software running on a PC. Once configured it is also possible to control the motor´s via a control box generating control voltages that are linearly related to the position along the axis. The span in either direction is several centimetres with submillimetre precision using the control box. Software control allows for precision in the order of 10-2 mm. The motors are connected to the control apparatus via a 40 m-cable. Thus fashioned the dipole sensor is capable of in-situ adjustment of the receiver. Experiments at sea demonstrate improvements of the signal-to-noise ratio of the dipole sensor of the order of 35 dB compared to manually adjusting the xy-position of the receiver.
