Abstract

In this report the usefulness of satellite communications in the new warfare is treated from aspects as time coverage, data rates, possibilities to communicate timely, transfer security, frequencies and jamming. Two epochs, namely 2005 and 2010, are specially taken into consideration. The study discusses which satellite systems best satisfy the communication needs. Satellite communication shall in many cases be regarded as one means of communication among several others and can constitute a complement of reserve to existing fixed networks. In the new warfare, satellite communication is suitable for broadcasting, IP traffic, as a link in general (especially between sensors), and from sensors to HQ:s.
