Abstract

Recent advances in sensor technology make it possible to use passive, optical methods for detecting incoming missiles and projectiles. With currently available, off-the-shelf components, a missile warning system for armoured vehicles can be built, capable of detecting high speed KE-penetrators at a distance of several hundred meters. When a threat is observed by detectors placed in different locations on the vehicle its range can be determined as well as its velocity, both magnitude and direction. The system can also discriminate between small arms and large calibre ammunition.
