Abstract

Experiments have been performed with the aim to prepare propellants adapted for ETC, a polymeric matrix for ADN-based propellants and a propellant with a very high burn rate to be used as a component in progressively burning propellants. The propellants adapted for ETC are based on the energetic polymers GAP and polyNIMMO with HMX used as oxidiser. To increase the electric conductivity in the flame, 5 % potassium nitrate was added. Installation of new equipment for processing the casting have made possible an increase in percentage of HMX from 55 to 65 % in the compositions, which resulted in a propellant with improved properties. It is known that ADN is incompatible with isocyanates that is included in traditional binder systems for preparation of composite propellants. Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) have been proposed as a conceivable alternative. Attempts have therefore been made on FOI of preparing an energetic TPE to be used together with ADN in composite propellants. Syntheses, analyses and characterizations of energetic thermoplastic elastomers prepared are reported on.
