Abstract
At the request of SWEDINT, FOI, the Division of NBC Defence, has made a quick preliminary overview of the existence of NBC- or environmentally related health risks, which military and civil deployed personell, stationed in Congo DR may be exposed to. Military or civilian observers are sent to a new mission area at an early stage. The experiences of the observers constitute an important link in building a knowledge bank of a theatre of operation. The main aim of this study is to highlight some questions of interest to the personnel out in the field at an early stage. Their experiences concerning NBC, environmental and health risks will then be evaluated. This study sums up a number of questions concerning environmental and health conditions to be handled by observers and other military and civil deployed personnel in Congo DR. This study deals with EIHH (Environmental and Industrial Health Hazards), NBC threats, terrorism and crime, mines and UXO (unexploded ammunition), diseases and sanitary issues. The most important conclusions drawn from the information available is that industrial or NBC related health risks will most likely not pose a serious threat to personnel stationed in Congo DR. However, it can not be ruled out that such problems can occur in some localities. The main risks connected to being in Congo DR are instead related to mines and UXO, sanitary issues, infectious diseases, diarrhoea and crime.
