Abstract

During recent years one branch of project "VMS Flyg" ("Aircraft EW) has been directed towards technology, systems and methods of airborne radar warning and ES-systems. As the need of research in this area didn´t match available resources the research effort was focused on methods of rapid and accurate geolocation of emitters. Demands on such geolocation is mainly set by the need to efficiently counter air defence systems, a procedure often called SEAD - Suppression of Enemy Air Defences. Within SEAD it is mandatory to precisely and rapidly locate SAM systems and thereby get the opportunity to attack them using precision weapons. As a direct consequence of the precise geolocation the time available to attack mobile SAM systems increases from transmitting time (time available to attack by anti radiation missiles) to time-on-station, which might be decisive to the result of the attack. In this report some basic methods of direction finding and emitter location are treated together with advanced precision geolocation methods and combinations of such methods. The emphasis of this report is on single aircraft precision geolocation but multi-platform scenarios are also considered.
