Abstract

Thermite charges for clearing mines and ammunition were developed, manufactured and tested. Background for the project was a need to be able to clear unexploded ammunition and mines without physically touching them and at the same time avoid detonation of the objects- or at least minimizing the risk of a full-scale detonation. This can be achieved by burning out the explosive in the object with a thermite charge, which first burns a large enough hole into the casing and then ignites the explosive, which will deflagrate. Two types of charges with three different types of nozzles were developed. The type "small" was specified to be able to cut through 3 mm of steel and the type "large" to do the same for at least 10 mm steel. Both specifications were met with a good margin. Thus, the smaller charge can be used to destroy most of the types of land mines known and the large one can be used against shells up to 155 mm, which was confirmed in tests on live ammunition at FMV: VoVC Provplats Karlsborg.
