Abstract

The purposes of this report is to discuss the following questions: How should the operational research (OR) support be designed to support the knowledge process in the Swedish Armed Forces Studies? What can the department of Defence Analysis to do enhance the OR-support? Is it possible to gain new knowledge in the Swedish Armed Forces Studies? The report is based on my experiences as operational researcher in the military study "Air Power cababilities in SEAD/DEAD" and a theoretical model of the knowledge process in working groups. The concluding reflections contain suggestions directed to the OR at FOI, the management of FOI Defence Analysis and the Swedish Armed Forces on how the military studies can be improved. I suggest that the OR-support should focus more on the knowledge process and less on the subject matter. To further improve the OR-support the management of FOI Defence Analysis must have a longterm strategy of where to place the OR-support in the Armed Forces. However the Swedish Armed Forces has the executive responsibility in the studies and therefore they have to give priority to the studies in a better way by using more comprehensive preparatory studies.
