Abstract
This report is the result of a study with the aim to analyse the need for satellite services in international operations in the context of the armed forces transformation towards a network-based defence. The procedure used to solve the task was mainly to interview employees within the armed forces with knowledge of the use of satellite services in international operations. The report treats imaging, communications, and navigation. Satellite imagery gives valuable information about the area of operations if the images are not obsolete. Without satellite communications the work in an international operation would very much be made difficult. Without the accuracy of position given by navigation satellites the situation for the personal in an international operation would become extremely hazardous. The benefit of satellite services are judged important due to the high capacity that quickly can be put into use where it is needed. Technology and experience speak for that the next generation of systems will become much more powerful and have highly augmented accessibility. The report gives suggestions for improving the conduct of international operations by more efficiently using the services and possibilities that satellites give: organization of the procurement and handling of satellite images need to be introduced; access to satellite communications must be guaranteed; and satellite navigation receivers must exist in such numbers that the need is covered.
