In this report FOI summarises the work done for the Swedish Armed Forces during 2003 within the research area Assessment and Operational Research. The research area consists of Operational Research Groups, placed in different parts of the Swedish Armed Forces and of research projects at FOI. The Operational Research Groups have primarily worked with issues related to the forthcoming 2004 defence bill, long term planning and various studies in the Swedish Armed Forces. In addition the Operational Research Groups have taken part in strategic and operational planning as well as in activities related to the tactical level. The project FoRMA has also focused on work related to the defence bill together with long term planning. The project OA-methods has carried out activities in order to develop the OR-competence at FOI and the support to OR-groups. The project Character of Future Crisis has studied the mechanisms of societal changes and development of mass movements. The project Principles of Economic Management has studied the management of economy, the flexibility of organisation as well as the decision processes of Swedish Armed Forces. The Swedish Armed Forces benefits from the research within the research area Assessment and Operational Research mainly through its decision support function. The 2003 turnover was 50.0 MSEK, of which 34.0 MSEK was the turnover for the Operational Research Groups.
