Abstract
Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Division of NBC Defence, has performed field measurements and soil sampling within an industrial estate at FOI Ursvik. These actions were taken to detect, if there were any, remarkable increase of alpha-, beta- and gamma emitters within the area of interest. Measurements were also performed outside the area. Before the field actions were taken, reports describing the previous work within the area, waste handling in the past and also an environmental test report, performed 2001, were considered. Three former employees, who earlier worked in the specific area, were also interviewed. The field measurements were based on three different systems, a field gamma-ray spectrometry system containing an HPGe detector, a portable gamma-ray spectrometry system containing a Nal detector and finally, a hand-held Nal instrument for gross-gamma measurements. Soil samples were also taken and these were analysed by Studsvik Nuclear for the content of alpha-, beta- and gamma emitters. None of the considered report, interviews, field measurements or the analyse results from the samples taken gave any indication of an increase in radioactive concentration. The only artificial radionuclide that was detected, Ceasium-137, originates from the Chernobyl fallout in 1986.
