Abstract

At the request of the Swedish Armed Forces, MUST, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, Division of NBC Defence, has conducted a preliminary overview of the existence of NBC or environmental health hazards, to which military and civilian personnel deployed to northern Afghanistan (the provinces of Sar-E-Pol, Jowzjan, Balkh and Faryab) may be exposed. It has proven difficult to obtain confirmed, detailed information about the country, in general and of the four northern provinces Sar-E-Pol, Jowzjan, Balkh and Faryab in particular. Therefore, assessments and data may to some extent be lacking or not fully evaluated. Thus, it is important that the information is continuously updated. The study deals with EIHH and PHC (Environmental and Industrial Health Hazards and Public Health Concerns), NBC threats, NBC terrorism, crime and diseases. In general, the greatest risks concerning Swedish personnel deployed to Afghanistan - besides the risks connected with mines and UXO (not assessed in this report) - are; food and waterborne infections, vector borne infections and respiratory infections. Local hot-sports polluted with hydrocarbons and pesticides may pose a threat, traffic and crime are also factors posing risks, unless adequate precautions are taken. The climate may to some extent (e.g. large diurnal variations) also pose a risk. NBC related health hazards will most likely only pose a limited threat to personnel stationed in Afghanistan.
