Abstract

A FOX-7 based formulation (called FOF-5, FOF = FOI Formulation) with the same performance (theoretically) as Composition B has been developed and investigated. It is thermally stable (according to STANAG 4582) and small-scale sensitivity tests show that it is insensitive to friction and in drop weight test a reaction is found at a height of 79 cm (19 J). This value is better than that of Composition B (12-15 J). The decomposition temperature of FOF-5 is 230°C (measured at 10°C/min with DSC). FOF-5 has a glass transition temperature of -40°C which is concidered acceptable according to the criteria of the Swedish Defence Forces. This report describes the development of FOF-5 and casting in 40 mm grenades. These have been tested with respect to low sensitivity/IM-properties and performance by Saab Bofors Dynamics (separate report).
