The performance of today´s ceramic armours is still far below that which is theoretically possible. The main reason for this is that the penetration resistance in the ceramic mainly is governed by fracture, not plastic deformation. By suppressing the fracture mechanisms, substantially better and more weight effective ceramic armours could be developed. This report describes the basic principles of a ceramic armour and presents an estimate of a possible upper bound for the penetration resistance of ceramic materials. The estimate has been done using two simple models assuming that the brittle behaviour is suppressed and that the maximum shear strength of the ceramic material is governing the penetration resistance. This estimated maximum penetration resistance is compared to existing experimental data for some high strength ceramic materials.
