Abstract
The purpose of this work was to study the influence of activated aluminium on the burning behaviour of an AP/Al/HTPB-based propellant. Two propellants, containing different batches of activated aluminium, have been prepared together with a reference propellant, containing regular aluminium, A-100. All three propellants showed good thermal stability and had a density in the range of 94 - 99% of the theoretical maximum density. The combustion experiments show that the burning rate can be increased by 20 to 25% by using activated aluminium. It also seems that the pressure exponent was not altered by using activated aluminium and remained at a low value of approximately 0.45. This is very encouraging findings and activated aluminium thus seems promising as an ingredient in future composite propellants. Future work will show if the increased reactivity of activated aluminium can increase the specific impulse.
