Abstract

The use of geographic information, e.g. in terms of maps, imagery and tables is very important for almost all types of military activities. The transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces into a flexible operational defence force with requirements on the capability to participation actively in international operations and on carrying out operations in urban environments will put new demands concerning support and use of geographical information and geographical intelligence. Tactical mapping is a new capability/service aiming for being part of a solution to meet these demands. Tactical mapping means that new and more detailed data can be obtained faster. However, it also means that data will be more fragmented and of varying quality, accuracy, etc. In order to treat and describe this property, the concept of heterogeneous geographic data is introduced. This concept is discussed and consequences are presented. Issues and problems of importance for further development, studies and demonstrator work in connection to tactical mapping is also presented. A proposal for an experimental platform, built around a specific set of geographical data, is made. Accessible unique data for such a data set are described together with the result from initial work on methods for analysis of these data. This report has been produced by FOI on commission by FMV LedsystT ADP C2.
