Abstract
During the field exercise Combined Challenge 06, CC 06, the Air Assault Battalion continued with organizational and methodical trials in aim to further develop the unit´s essential mission capabilities. These trials were based upon the development potential identified during last year´s field exercise ASÖ-05. With the purpose to evaluate the performed development, FOI was asked to execute a validation and verification study to explore if the performed development has increased the unit´s efficiency and effectiveness, in comparison to last year´s validation and verification work with the unit. The verification effort has primarily focused on command and control of medical resources and how these resources have been used over time. Two general conclusions are that the organizational and personnel innovations performed during the year, drastically have increased the unit´s effectiveness and efficiency. This is foremost observed in increased situational awareness on all command levels in the unit, and also in the extended capability at individual level to take initiative, which have resulted in a more rapid management of wounded personnel. The steps taken have entailed increased quality in the medical chain and increased confidence within the unit regarding the medical function. Currently the medical function is regarded as a tactical resource within the Air Assault Battalion. In principle, all the limitations regarding the medical function, identified during last year´s exercise, have been eliminated. An identified area that needs to be further explored is when the unit is blended with mechanized battalions. During these situations frictions in the interfaces between units´ management of medical resources have been identified, which needs to be further exercised and evaluated during upcoming exercise.
