Abstract
A preliminary desk assessment was made on request by the Swedish Armed Forces, with purpose to identify potential key environmental health hazards to personnel deploying with IKS06 patrolling along the Lebanese coastline and at sea. The assessment has focussed on coastal and harbour areas, river and effluent discharge along the coastline, sea cargo and potential coastal industrial accidents. The report covers considerations related to climate, epidemiology, industrial hazards, pollution, CBRN, traffic, waste, water and sanitation. In addition, the assessment also briefly discusses environmental protective considerations when operating along the Lebanese coastline. In general, the greatest threats concerning Swedish personnel deployed to Lebanon - in addition to the threats connected with mines and UXO (not assessed in this report) - are considered to be the traffic situation and water and sanitation issues. This assessment was performed in September 2006. The quality and recent updating of information are key factors for making reliable and relevant health hazard and environmental protection assessments. Continuous updates should therefore be made as events unfold.
