Abstract

The US is an energy-political superpower. Understanding its role is of pivotal importance. The aimof this report is therefore to show what the US energy situation and energy policies look like. It covers topics such as the US´position vis-à-vis other states and its current energy balance in terms of oil, gas, coal, electricity, nuclear power and renewables. Finally, selected energy relations with foreign partners are covered along with a note on how the US policy has shifted over time. The main conclusion is that the US´ dependence on energy, especially imported energy, will remain at a high level despite increased efforts in energy savings and improved efficiency. A key consequence is that the US engagement in key producer regions and transport routes will be kept.
