Abstract

This report presents a brief overview of the five human senses. These senses provide information to the conscious information processing system in the brain. First, a description of the five senses is given (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch). Besides these five senses, multimodal perception is also presented. In multimodal perception two or more senses are used to provide a collective picture of the surrounding environment. The report briefly describes how these senses work and what their limitations are. Examples are given on how the senses can "trick" us into believing we see or hear something when actually something else is presented. After this review, current perception research is presented (as presented in public journals and conferences around the world), as well as some trends in perception research.
