Abstract

An evaluation of handling risks in connection with use of rökhandgranat 05 (smoke hand grenade 05) has been made. The purpose of the evaluation was to examine the risks of residing red phosphorous and its sensitivity towards external influence in connection with outdoor use. The function of the smoke hand grenade has been evaluated in trial tests for different conditions. Tests over time have been made where rökhgr 05 has been exposed to natural environmental influences for 90 days. Leaching and neutralisation tests with red phosphorous have been performed in a lab environment. The trial results show that up to 30 % of the red phosphorous content may still be left in the environment after use in rain or on wet ground. It is recommended to collect and burn red phosphorous residues, concluded to be the most benign method for the environment and the best method from a safety perspective. Rökhandgranat 05 is recommended to be used in a dry environment only, to avoid deposition of phosphorous residues in the environment for long periods of time.
