Abstract

The rapid development in, predominantly civilian, materials research gives possibilities to develop signature management materials with new and improved properties. FOI monitors, on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces, the area. This report shows that a lot of activity is going on in the field, and that knowledge about signature related materials might be crucial in a measure/countermeasure duel. Interesting projects in the nanotechnology area can soon give new applications, for example highly durable transparent radar absorbers. Other combinations of properties, that are impossible to achieve with conventional technology, is also within reach. Research on metamaterials is more spectacular but still on a basic level. Military applications, such as true invisibility, are perhaps possible but lie in the far future.
