Abstract
During 2008, FOI further reduced its staff resulting in a decreased overall energy consumption from approx. 11 500 MWh in 2007 to approx. 11 300 MWh in 2008. However, the energy consumption per employee has increased, which could be explained by the fact that the used office area still is the same as in 2007. In 2008, the total amount of carbon dioxide emissions due to energy consumption and transport reached an approx. 2 500 tons of CO2, or, 2,6 tons per staff member, a decrease compared to 2007. When it comes to the important environmental aspects, the divisions have set 17 partial objectives of which 10 have been partially or more than partially fulfilled. Six of the objectives have been accounted for using ratios. An in-house environmental revision has been conducted at the divisions for Research Support and Administration and Information Systems in Linköping. At the latter, an inspection of the premises, the recycling stations as well of the chemistry laboratories was conducted. Moreover, interviews were carried otu with the top management and other key managers at both divisions. In conclusions, the environmental work is functioning well on a local level. In 2008, the total cost of the environmental work at FOI amounted to SEK 1,6 million of which SEK 0,5 million were costs for the authority-wide environmental work and SEK 0,8 million for the divisional one. In addition, 0,3 million were external costs regarding the permit application for the establishment in Grindsjön, all in accordance with the Swedish Environmental Code. The research at FOI has an indirect impact on the environment. During 2008, FOI performed 12 environmental projects at the request of the defence sector to a sum of SEK 15 million. FOI also performs civilian environmental research which amounted to SEK10 million in 2008. In all, FOI has thus conducted environmental research to the sum of SEK 25 million.
