Abstract
The report describes and investigates protocol solutions for a wireless underwater sensor network. The task of the network is passive as well as active acoustic surveillance. The basic scenario and protocols for that scenario has been described in [1]. In this report we extend the scenario and protocol solution to include relaying as well as assess the efficiency of our protocol solution. It is shown that our solution, which is based on TDMA, uses the channel efficiently. Another advantage of the proposed solution is the well defined structure which facilitates automatic protocol generation based on the topology and traffic model. Furthermore, we consider the energy efficiency of our solution and describe the necessary modifications of the protocol solution when two separate frequency bands or other traffic models are used. Finally, initiation of the network and how to select a new access point when the old does not function properly anymore are discussed.
