Abstract

The present environmental review is a situation analysis and mapping of FOIs activities and its impact, as well as being a link to relevant environmental legislation and requirements. The results of the survey will form the basis for the prioritization of efforts in FOIs environmental management system. Starting with a general description of FOIs activities, these have been divided into the following activities which have been analyzed with respect to environmental impact. Research having a direct impact on the environment (use of chemicals, blasting and diffusion experiments). Additional direct activities affecting the environment (research support, field service and installation, recovery, properties and operations, use of energy, business travels and transportation). Research having indirect effects on the environment (research and technology development, collaboration). Other indirect activities affecting the environment (procurement, training/ courses/conferences/simulation, leasing of properties) The study shows that FOIs environmental impact consists of positive contributions through research for the defence and the civil society and, too, collaboration and training performed by FOI. The negative impact mainly consists of flight and car travels as well as goods transportation. The conclusions also provide guidance on where to place the focus as regards the future environmental work.
