Abstract

This is a study of infrared (IR) signature properties. The purpose is to validate some of the models which are used in the Signature modelling project against well defined measurements, to gain practical experience of how to apply these models, and to engage in the international IR signature collaboration network "CUBI forum". The study includes construction and manufacturing of a CUBI object, a generic ground object for IR signature studies. Radiance and temperature measurements of the CUBI have been performed. The radiance was measured with IR cameras at 3-5 µm and 8-12 µm for about a week. Weather parameters were logged in parallel. The surface of the CUBI has been characterized with BRDF and DHR reflectivity measurements. These data were used to parameterize the Sandford-Robertson BRDF model which was used in the simulations. Simulated and measured temperatures are compared. The results agree in some parts and disagree in other parts. Possible causes of the discrepancies are discussed, and further work is suggested.
