Abstract
The V/L-assessment tool AVAL is used to estimate different warheads' effects in different types of targets and the targets' ability to withstand the warhead effects. The estimation is on a platform level and defines the changes in functionality that occurs in the attacked target, e.g. the mobility or fire power with the main gun might be killed. AVAL considers conventional warheads and targets in air, on land and on the sea surface. There are specialized models for some kinds of targets, e.g. water inflow (naval targets), structural strength of wings (fixed wing aircrafts) and mine effects against wheels and tracks (land vehicles). The report gives a short summary of the current AVAL-models used to treat underwater warheads effects on surface ships. The models are deliberately simple which implies a simplification of the effects from underwater detonations. This also implies that engineering based judgements are required to define the damage parameters. Improvements, further development and new models are proposed when applicable.
